More than just a place to sleep, a child’s bedroom can be a place of play, creativity and imagination.
There are many ways you can improve a kid’s bedroom, whether it’s implementing a theme, using an explosion of colour, creating furniture or adding fun features.
Here are 10 creative ways that Bunnings Workshop community members have improved their kids’ bedrooms to transform the space into one they love spending time in.
A fun bookcase can help encourage your kids to read and enjoy their book collection. Creative member @prettyliving made a ute bookshelf for her son’s room and a castle bookcase for her daughter, while @diy_hausdesigns built a stylish and practical Montessori-inspired kids bookshelf.
Display shelves let kids proudly show off their favourite toys while keeping their room tidy. Experienced member @Renowayoflife created a toy car wall unit display, while @Kim made a Lego character display frame as a feature for her son’s room.
You can create different zones in even reasonably small spaces. @TheSparrowHome used storage cubes, wallpaper, paint and shelving effectively in a kids bedroom makeover with reading nook.
Create a bed that kids are actually excited to jump into. @Tara86 added more play space to the room by building a kids bunk bed and also a D.I.Y. kids loft bed for another bedroom. For low-set options get inspiration from the charming kids house frame bed by @Dark and @MitchellM's upcycled childrens canopy bed with star lights.
Lighting can add a touch of magic to a child’s room. Community member @Lmassih used LEDs for a kids bedroom makeover with MDF shelving, and @RainbowDiY made lighting the hero of a girl’s bedroom makeover.
Make playtime even more entertaining with features like a slide or climbing wall. @GwenH had a lot of fun with a kids bedroom makeover with loft and slide, while @SamNZ gave his son the opportunity to burn off energy in a boys bedroom with slide and climbing wall.
A theme can help tie everything together, making the room feel extra special and personalised. @cam_bubb created a basketball gamer-themed bedroom, while @Sara_T used paint creatively to make a dinosaur-themed bedroom.
A feature wall can greatly enliven any room. @Alyce_Pham used wallpaper, paint and timber moulding for a girl’s bedroom feature wall. @TheSparrowHome also went for a mature-look, adding kids bedroom wall panelling using Specrite.
An entertainment cabinet can help keep games organized and even become a feature of the room. @Codey created a D.I.Y. Nintendo Switch TV cabinet which embeds the screen in an oversized gaming console that doubles as storage.
More proof that furniture can be both fun and functional. @BeckBekkers transformed an ordinary bedside cabinet into a real talking point using clever painting techniques in a cartoon-style bedroom drawers upcycle project.
