How to build a circular pool deck?

Hello I have a big backyard project on the go I have a pool placed in an area and I want to put a deck around the whole pool. The pool is 4.1m diameter and it has a slopped yard. I am wanting a quarter of the deck to be just under the pool lip and the rest of the deck at ground level with seating and stairs. How do I go about figuring out my footings and how many I need I'm looking at 8x5m area

Re: circular pool deck

Hello @davideves

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your proposed decking plan.

Before you begin, I suggest checking the rules and regulations of your local council in regards to building a deck around your pool. Should this type of building project require a permit, I suggest engaging the services of an engineer or drafts person to draw up decking plans. They will be well acquainted with the council's rules and regulations and will know how to draw the plans properly.

To make the process easier, I propose doing a basic drawing to indicate where the split level in the deck is going to occur. Doing a few sketches will give your engineer an idea of how you want to layout your deck. Your engineer or draftsperson can also give you a materials list which you can then forward to the stores trade specialist, and they can do a quote for you.

Having a proper decking plan will eliminate guessing and you'll know exactly what steps to take to complete your project. But in the interest of generating ideas, we'll be more than happy to do a sample sketch for you and perhaps offer some ideas in regards to layout.

Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1 and @Nailbag for their recommendations.

If you have any other questions, please let us know.

Re: How to build a circular pool deck?

Good Morning @davideves

Welcome to the Bunnings community pages  Decking would have to be one of the most popular posts  Id take a stroll through the search bar and have a look tho you will notice the hours slipping past

A sketch and a few sketches would be where I would start, wether you are doing it yourself or getting it drawn up a sketch is the best place to start.

Sketches Id suggest and order to draw them in.

- Top down of the existing yard. (make sure you include all hard things, trees, water, pool filter)

- Top down of the future yard with the deck at the size you want. (include pathways you will need or need to move)

- Profile from the ground level side of the deck.

- Profile from the raised level side. (include your fence in the background as you may find that you will be putting on a show for your neighbours)

- An Xray down of the deck area, this is for your piers/supports for the beams and decking. (I build it backwards, you now have a look in your mind of what you want, then you need a supporting structure to shape it)

Things to include, pool fencing, gate, servicing the filter, shade, lighting, power for the pump.

Here is my decking project, I make reference to my sketch pad but I dont see a pic of the sketch (did this a decade and a half ago) Will see if I can find the sketch pad to show. Pool deck stage 1 and Pool deck stage 2

G'day @Dave-1 !

"Decking would have to be one of the most popular posts"

Most certainly, but I think No.1 would be plumbing - taps in particular. 😁

Sorry for the interlude and thread drift - carry on.

Hahahahah @Noyade

 Mmmmm you have a point... But everytime we comment more people may see the post
I wonder what the most popular subject would be? @Jason or the Bunnings crew may be able to answer that analytic

I do remember asking Katie the same question, when she was in the Bunnings Workshop control tower. And for statistics on a few other questions - but she left. I think it would be all rather interesting. 🤔

My money is on "how to build a low-lying deck" @Noyade and @Dave-1 but then I rarely get tagged on plumbing posts.

Re: How to build a circular pool deck?

Hi @davideves

I would have to agree with @EricL in that getting the requirements professionally drawn up by a Draftsperson as you will most definitely need a building permit and I suspect possibly a planning one as well. This is due to the height of the deck and potential concerns of "overlooking (privacy)" and the potential for increased noise for your neighbours. This means they will be notified of your intent to build and how it will impact them. They will have the right of reply to object, which if you want to dispute will mean a very long drawn out court case.

Sorry to be a spoiler, but these are very important factors you need to begin with before looking for advice on how to build the structures.
