Make your rental home more comfortable and stylish by using inexpensive temporary solutions.

From using rugs to adding storage and potted plants, our community members have shared many creative ways to customise and improve their homes.

1. Use free-standing storage

Increase storage space using solutions like free-standing wardrobes and cube units, which are simple to assemble and remove at the end of the tenancy. While turning an unused spare room into a functional craft room, storage room and playroom, Bunnings Workshop member Carol (@Carol_Prime) used Flexi Storage Clever Cubes.

2. Build an entertainment unit with a TV mount

Get the look of a wall-mounted screen without needing to drill holes in the wall. Check out Matt (@mattham)'s D.I.Y. entertainment unit, which uses laminated Pine panels to provide a TV mount.

3. Update the walls with temporary wallpaper

Wallpaper is an easy way to create a feature wall or transform a whole room. You can use peel-and-stick wallpaper that can be removed without causing damage, making it ideal for rental properties.

6. Add greenery

Potted plants can go with you wherever you make your home, making them an easy fix for renters. Leanne (@craftyhopper)'s D.I.Y. plant stand is an effective way to display your potted plants.

7. Organise

Declutter and organise your rental with solutions like baskets or drawer organisers that can help you find what you need quickly and easily. Rizmy (@riziqbl) 's custom timber cutlery tray is great for keeping his cutlery organised while maximising storage space. 8. Add privacy

Temporary room dividers like screens can partition rooms, while window treatments like window film can control the amount of visibility from outside. Jess (@prettyliving) installed mirror-tinted window film to create privacy and reduce sun glare.

9. Add accessories and art

Personalise your rental by using D.I.Y. accessories like Garima (@igarimasingh)'s extra large ottoman tray or by hanging art pieces. Be careful not to damage walls with nail and screw holes when hanging art. Command strips or adhesive picture hangers work well for lighter items like posters and smaller frames.

10. Replace toilet seats

Toilet seats in rental properties typically don't age well. Replacing a stained or broken toilet seat is an easy and cost-effective D.I.Y. job.

Check out the Bunnings guide How to replace a toilet seat for more tips.

Remember to review your lease agreement and consult with your landlord before making any alterations to the rental property. It's essential to comply with any rules or restrictions regarding modifications to ensure you don't violate your lease terms.
