Is this damage termites or wood rot?

Hi everyone,

I have 150mm x 50mm sleepers which are used as boundaries for outdoor hedges. The sleepers are supported in place by garden stakes. It has been about 1.5 - 2 years since the original installation and I noticed one of the stakes split and as I pulled out the stake from the ground noticed something interesting/concerning (refer to the picture) attached.

Does anyone know if this is possible termite damage or just wood rot over time?

Much appreciated.

Thank You

Re: Garden stakes - termite or wood rot?

Hi @Yangaz,

It could be a combination, but there is definitely some insect damage there, indicated by the unusual tunnel-like patterns. If you're in a termite-prone area, it's likely a good idea to have a professional come in and inspect the area. Moving forward, it would be best to use steel pegs or timber pegs that have been treated for insect attack.

Please let me know if you have further questions.

Mitchell
