Hi guys,
Just moved into new place first time lawn owner. Have some questions:
1. Could someone help identify what type of grass I have?
2. Also in the second photo attached, is this a weed that is growing (thr longer stems with purple tips)? This is only found in the front lawn, the neighbours front lawn seems to have these growing as well none in my backyard lawn though.
3. What's the best thing I can do to try create a "fuller" look to my lawn as some areas looking bare?
Appreciate any advice and help!
Thanks in advance!
Jimmy

Hi @jen5
It is possibly a rye grass but don't hold me to that!

Can anybody tell me what sort of grass this is
Hello @camps
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about your lawn.
From the image, your grass appears to be a type of Kikuyu or possibly a hybrid variety. Kikuyu is a common warm-season grass known for its rapid growth, bright green colour, and slightly coarse texture. It spreads through underground rhizomes and above-ground runners, making it quite aggressive but also durable.
If the grass has a soft feel with fine leaves, it could be a hybrid or a blend with other species like Couch or Buffalo. Kikuyu thrives in full sun but can struggle in shady areas. It requires regular mowing, as it can become thatchy if left to grow too long.
If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Thanks
im not sure which of the 2 it could be. Want to get it right as iv already got a mix of that and buffalo. Didn’t want to have a 3rd variety
Hello @camps,
If you decide to use a slow-release fertilizer on your lawn, just make sure it says "For all varieties" you get to feed your lawn without worrying that you might harm the other types of grass mixed in.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Hi @Dre,
A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.
I use Pl@ntNet identify to help me narrow down what plants I am looking at, and it seems to think it is St Augustine grass.
Is there a reason you'd like more information beyond the fact that it is buffalo grass?
Let me know if you have further questions.
Jacob
Thanks JacobZ
I’m experiencing a clover outbreak and I understand that some of the common herbicide can damage Buffalo Grass.
I just want to make sure I buy one that won’t kill my lawn.
The affected area is approximately 7 m² and seems to be growing rapidly.
Hi @Dre,
You can use a buffalo-specific herbicide such as this Yates BuffaloPro Hose On Lawn Weed Killer.
It is designed for use on buffalo lawns and will kill clover without damaging your lawn.
Let me know if you have any further questions.

Does anyone know what type of grass this is? I’m looking to buy some weed killer and want to make sure I buy the right type for my lawn so I don’t accidentally kill it. Thanks!
