So see if you can see the fur on the branch vs the fur on the bud on our Fuji apple tree.
Can anyone tell me what is what here. This is a day after spray with Manutec sulfur anti fungal treatment.
not sure what I’m looking at.
Hi @John57,
Thanks for sharing your photos of the Fuji apple tree. The fuzzy appearance on the branches is likely natural fine hairs or lenticels common on young apple tree branches, while the fuzz on the buds is probably natural bud scales or hairs that protect the developing buds.
Since you sprayed with Manutec sulfur just a day ago, any powdery residue from the treatment might still be visible, but sulfur usually leaves a powdery white film rather than true fuzz. If the fuzz is spreading rapidly and looks like powdery mildew, that could be a fungal infection, but if it feels like soft hairs attached to the plant, it’s probably normal. Keep an eye on the buds for any discolouration or deterioration and monitor the situation over the next few days. If it worsens despite treatment, further action may be needed.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Mitchell
G'day Mitchel,
Thanks for your reply here.
The branch and bud both look natural rather than like an add-on fungus. Hairs rather than powder
Last season, the tree appeared to have a powdery coating on many of its branches. And it finished up with a scab infection that was quite severe, as well as leaf infection, skin damage, and smaller fruit size. Still, it was edible and sweet. This year, as we planned and discussed with you and Noelle earlier, we have pruned it and given it its first Manutec fungal spray. I plan another one later on, perhaps in two weeks. The same treatment was given to all the trees: peach, plumcot, apricot, and apple. Since then, we have applied our power booster, rice water. Later, I will stock up and feed the citrus and fruit trees with fertiliser, probably Richgro. We may have fewer apples this year, but hopefully, we have stopped the fungus, having cleared the dropped leaves from under the tree, repeatedly.
