Hi,
Can anyone please
advise me on why my Gardinia leaves are developing yellow spots.
Thanks
Hello @Tracey007
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your gardenia leaves.
Your Gardenia’s yellow-spotted leaves suggest it’s under some form of stress, which could be due to a few common causes.
Gardenias are heavy feeders and very sensitive to nutrient imbalances. Yellow spots could indicate a lack of iron or magnesium, especially if new leaves remain green while older ones yellow. Try feeding with an acidic plant fertilizer or one specifically formulated for Gardenias or azaleas. A liquid iron supplement can also help if iron deficiency is the cause.
These plants like consistently moist but well-drained soil. If the soil stays soggy, roots can suffocate and develop rot, leading to mottled yellowing. Conversely, letting the soil dry out too much can also stress the plant. Water when the top few centimeters of soil feel slightly dry, and make sure the pot drains freely.
Gardenias prefer acidic soil (pH 5.0–6.0). If the soil is too alkaline, nutrient uptake especially of iron is reduced, leading to chlorosis (yellowing between veins or spotty discoloration). You can test the soil pH and correct it with sulfur or an acidifying fertilizer if necessary.
Inspect the undersides of the leaves and stems for small insects like spider mites, aphids, or scale. These pests can cause stippling and yellow spotting. Fungal leaf spot diseases can also appear as irregular yellow patches. If pests are present, wash the leaves gently and use neem oil or an insecticidal soap. For fungal problems, remove affected leaves and improve air circulation.
