There are some brown parts that have developed on my cactus and they appear flaky and dry. Is this sunburn or something else? What can I do to fix it?

The brown, flaky patches on your cactus are most likely the result of sunburn, especially if it was recently moved to a sunnier position or exposed to intense direct sunlight for extended periods. Cacti, while known for their love of sunlight, can still suffer from sun damage when the light is too harsh or the transition to full sun is too sudden. The damaged areas may appear dry, leathery, or even slightly crusted as the plant's tissue reacts to the excess exposure. These patches will not heal, but if the damage is limited, the cactus can still thrive with proper care moving forward.
To help your cactus recover, consider relocating it to a spot with bright but indirect light, especially during the hottest part of the day. If it needs to remain outdoors, providing some light shade in the afternoon can prevent further stress. Water the plant only when the soil is completely dry, and avoid overwatering as sunburned areas can become vulnerable to rot if they remain too moist.
If the potting mix seems compacted or poorly draining, repotting into a cactus-specific mix can help promote healthier roots. Going forward, any new growth should appear healthy and green, and with time and care, the plant should continue to grow well despite the scarring.
