Hi
what are these white spots on my eucalyptus trees pls and how do I treat it
thanks
Hello @Gaffe
Those white insects on your eucalyptus tree are possibly lerps produced by psyllids, commonly known as Eucalyptus lerp psyllids. Lerps are the small white, waxy coverings that these sap-sucking insects create to protect themselves while feeding on the underside of eucalyptus leaves. They can appear as small white scales, dots, or flakes and may sometimes be mistaken for mealybugs or scale insects.
Psyllids feed by sucking sap from the leaves, which can cause leaf curling, yellowing, or defoliation when infestations are heavy. The sugary lerps they produce can also encourage the growth of sooty mold. Young eucalyptus trees or those under stress tend to be more susceptible.
You can manage mild infestations by hosing off the affected leaves with a strong jet of water to dislodge the insects and lerps. For heavier infestations, prune heavily affected areas and dispose of them. Encouraging natural predators such as ladybirds, lacewings, and parasitic wasps helps control the population over time. Avoid using broad-spectrum insecticides, as these can harm beneficial insects that naturally regulate psyllids.
As a possible alternative in controlling the insects, I propose using either Seasol 1L EarthCare White Oil Insect Spray or OCP 750ml Ready To Use Eco-Oil. My best advice is to spray early morning or late afternoon. Make sure to spray under the leaves for full coverage.
Please remember to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and mask when using the spray.
