I wanted something festive but functional—something that felt personal and added character without being over-the-top. This DIY was a quick, low-cost way to bring Halloween spirit to the front door, and it gave me a chance to experiment with design while keeping things practical.
Plain Bunnings doormat (base surface)
White outdoor acrylic paint (for the web design)
Pencil to sketch outline
Small paint brush
Painter’s tape (to secure stencil and mask edges)
Drop cloth (to protect your workspace)
Sealant spray (for weatherproofing)
Craft knife (for cutting outline)
Scissors (for trimming stencil and tape)
Stencil brush or small paint roller (for applying paint)
Painter’s tape (to secure stencil and mask edges)
Ruler or measuring tape (to centre the design)
Drop cloth or newspaper (to protect workspace)
I selected a plain doormat as the base surface from Bunnings
I sketched spider web design to use as a stencil and used painters tape to outline
I measured and cut the stencil using scissors - this requires some effort so be careful!
I flipped the mat over to examine shape and cut extras to make it symmetrical
I then flipped the mat over and sprayed with a few layers of black spray paint. When doing this, it's best to have good ventilation and do a few coats. I then waited a few days for it to dry.
Once dried, I again used painters' tape to map out the design and did a few layers of white acrylic paint with my brush. The mat is quite thick so you need a fair amount of paint.
Once the white paint dried, I did a few layers of sealant to make this weatherproof and long-lasting for many Halloweens to come.
Style and enjoy your spooky dooky doormat!
This is fantastic, @francinem! I love how creative and practical it is. The spider web design really adds character without being over-the-top. It seems like such a fun project to do with kids too, letting them get hands-on with painting and design. Such an easy and effective way for anyone to spruce up their house for Halloween.
Great job, and thanks so much for sharing!
