How to fix paint streaks?

IMG_1693.jpeg

We repainted a rendered section of our facade over the weekend but have ended up with some visible roller marks on one wall - see photo.

we’ve tried repainting that wall again, including laying off and feathering but for the life of us we can’t get those streaks out.

looking for any tips or suggestions. Thanks!

Re: how to fix paint streaks

Hello @RyanL1

One of the reasons you get streaking on your painted wall is the accidental application of paint to a surface that has not yet fully cured or is still marginally in the curing process. You've technically trapped the moisture in the paint and now you have a non-uniform finish. This also results in a much longer curing time or you get a phenomenon where the paint surface is dry but when you push the paint surface with your finger the inside is still very soft.

The general rule is to apply the first coat and allow the paint to cure properly. Touching up or doing a secondary application of the roller to the surface too early will result in streaking. I propose allowing the paint to fully cure first and that includes those sections that are only dry on the surface. Once the paint is totally dry, I suggest applying one more coat, but this time apply it in a "W" pattern and do not roll over sections you've already painted no matter how tempting it is.

Allow the final coat to dry completely, then check whether the surface still shows streaking. If streaks remain, we may need to contact the paint manufacturer for further guidance.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Eric

Re: how to fix paint streaks

Thanks Eric!

we gave it the required 3 hours between coats - and we are in Brisbane so with the hot dry weather, we expected that would be ample time to cure. And of the three surfaces painted, this is the only one that has done it.

But we have plenty of paint left so will follow your recommendation and see how we go. I assume if we paint it this weekend, being almost a full week since we did it, that should be sufficient curing time?

thanks for the help!

Re: how to fix paint streaks

Hi @RyanL1,

This weekend would be fine.

Once you've painted in the W pattern, if you still see vertical lines, we'd have to suspect that something is creating them in that area. I note you have weeper vents in the wall directly below the marks. Has there ever been any moisture in this wall?
