How to paint posts that have splits?

This Bali hut is over 10 years old and needs upgrading.  I was told by a friend that the post as in the photo can be repainted without being repaired.  Is this correct?

The other posts are similar but all very strong and stable.

Re: Painting posts that have splits

Hi @Cathy001,

Since this is a structure that’s carrying a fair amount of weight, any cracks in the posts should be taken seriously. Small, shallow splits in timber posts are often just cosmetic and not usually a major concern, but from your photo, this crack looks quite deep and could potentially affect the structural integrity of the post. While it’s possible that the post is still sound and the split hasn’t compromised it, the only safe way to know for sure is to have it assessed by a professional — ideally a structural engineer or qualified builder.

If the post is still performing adequately, there may be repair options available, such as steel banding or bracing, to stabilise the split before repainting. However, if the crack is deemed structural, replacement would be the safer option. Simply painting over the post won’t address any underlying issues and could mask a problem that needs attention. Given the age of the hut and the weight these posts carry, I’d strongly recommend getting a professional opinion before proceeding with cosmetic work. That way, you’ll have peace of mind that the structure is safe as well as looking refreshed.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Painting posts that have splits

Hi Mitchell

The attached photo shows the top of the post where it was cut for the beam.  The crack runs down from the cut to the bottom of the post but not straight.  There are 3 staggered splits. I will have it assessed but don't really want to replace the pole.  It still seems sound. Thank you for your advice.
