How to protect exposed timber under door lock?

These external doors & locks were replaced quite recently but the timber on one side of the door is exposed... I don't know what this part is called. Is that how it should be?

Re: Query re door lock - exposed timber

Hello @Else

Technically it can be done in that manner as it is not directly exposed to the outside or to the weather. However, if it was painted, it would provide an extra layer of protection and would look much better instead of just raw wood. If you have any leftover paint in your shed or garage, I suggest removing the striker plate and painting the holes in the frame. Once the paint has cured you can return the striker plate back to its original position.

If you have any other question we can help with, please let us know.
