How to re-oil a weathered deck?

Hi,

I have a deck at the back and front that hasn't been reoiled in over 2 years. It is a bit grey in some areas and fine in other areas. It is grey/weathered mostly where water pools or is exposed to the elements (i.e. not shelter)

Is sanding required? Or can we do a good wash, then reoil the deckf7f1b0aa-979f-4087-94c3-8061fd9c883d.jpg091f6893-7abe-40d0-91e2-41b512cda5a5.jpg84d5ecc6-1562-4708-ab46-2fa1787936a2.jpg2e032caf-0ea5-4f97-897a-9394f0243f21.jpg2c51a45a-220f-4a9e-98c1-21295d326ee5.jpg6fac4c98-f902-44c4-9c83-f97f38be16bb.jpgb26bbdbc-62ec-490b-9b81-fb922552db64.jpg

Re: How to re-oil a weathered deck?

Hi @echan28,

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

As your deck has quite a lot of scratches and greyed, weathered areas, it would be worthwhile sanding it back before oiling.

Sanding will remove the top layer of timber and create a uniform surface, which will, in turn, make the application of oil look more uniform and much better.

I'd suggest having a look at How To Sand A Deck and How To Oil Your Deck for some guidance on the process.

If you have any specific questions about the process, please let me know so I can assist further.

Jacob
