This vent protrudes from the garden. It is becoming a tripping hazard, I'm told it can be cut down to the level of the ground a cap can be inserted on top. Is this correct and what size cap would I buy?
Does anyone know what this vent is supposed to do?
Looks like a very old vent to allow fresh air to enter your drainage system, balancing pressure and facilitating water flow. Could be a bad idea to cap it. I'd have a plumber inspect the line.
Hello @tigerzen
It's great that you've received excellent advice from @nagemi. I totally agree with the recommendation made and that is to consult a plumber in regards to updating or changing the pipe vent. Covering it might produce unexpected results. One other option is to paint the body in bright yellow along with glow in the dark stripes. In this manner the vent will be very visible in day or night.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Hi tigerzen,
How old is the house and the area where you live?
Could be a septic tank ventilation pipe.
We moved back in 2006 to one of our original family homes built in 1970 in 3150 - with a septic tank.
Cheers
Hi Alan, the property is in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Septic tank ventilation pipe sounds right. Spoke to a handyman who says the normal fix is to cut it down and put a ventilation cap on it. I'll probably refer this to a plumber just to make sure.
