The horrendous rotten fascia boards are being replaced in the coming weeks 🙈. I need to figure out how to protect the ends of the wooden beams before the FNQ wet season rolls around again, help!!
Hi @parbuckle,
It would be best to start by filling any cracks or gaps in the beam ends with Builders bog so you have a smooth and sealed surface that water cannot easily penetrate. Once the filler has cured and been sanded back, give the ends a thorough coat of primer if needed, followed by two to three good coats of Dulux Weathershield or another quality exterior paint. This will provide a strong protective barrier against moisture and help prevent rot from developing again.
For even more protection, you could also consider installing a small flashing or capping over the top of the beams. This will deflect rainwater away from the exposed end grain, which is the most vulnerable part of the timber. Taking both steps together will give the beams the best possible defence .
Please let me know if you have any questions.
