Sealing bench to wall

Sealing bench to wall

Hi
I have a bench lining my outside wall and it looks like the adhesive / seal is starting to come off - see pictures.

What should I use to reseal it? Can I put any new sealant over the top of the existing sealant, or do I need to scrape away the old stuff and put a fresh set on?

Thanks,

Re: Sealing bench to wall

Hello @PhilM1

It appears that your bench lining was covered in very thick paint. The cracks you are seeing is caused by timber expansion and is causing the paint to come off the surface forming the cracks. I propose sanding the edge of the timber bench and applying a new coat of exterior paint such as the Dulux Weathershield. But before painting I suggest testing the surface to make sure you choose the right paint. Get a clean rag and a bottle of methylated spirits. Put some metho on the corner of the clean rag and wipe it over the surface of the bench. If the paint comes off it is a water-based paint. If the surface shines and the paint does not come off it is oil-based.

As for the split in the corner, I recommend removing the old silicone sealer and using Sika 310ml White Sikaflex Pro+ Polyurethane Sealant - 310ml White. It can also be used to seal the back of the bench where gaps are starting to appear. Please remember to remove any of the old sealant before applying the new one.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
