Tint, stain or paint deck?

We have built a step extension for our deck. We need to paint/ stain/ tint it the same colour. Can’t figure out what it is.

Re: Tint, stain or paint deck

Hi @Alysha16,

Taking an educated guess, it looks like a merbau deck stain such as this Cabot's 4L Merbau Water Based Deck And Exterior Timber Stain.

Given the deteriorated nature of the existing deck stain, it might be best to sand at least the deteriorated sections back and paint everything again. You could use a random orbital sander with some 120-grit sandpaper to prepare the deteriorated sections before recoating everything.

Check out How To Stain A Deck for some guidance on the application process.

Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

We tried the stain on a spare piece and definitely isn’t that. Must be paint. If we paint it a different colour what’s the best paint?

Re: Tint, stain or paint deck

Hi @Alysha16,

If you are looking to paint the timber, I'd suggest an exterior-grade paint such as Dulux Weathershield. It looks similar to mission brown in colouring, but if you can take at least a 5-10 cent size sample with you, the team in-store can do a colour match on it.

If the paint on the rest of the deck is looking a bit worn, you might consider sanding back any delaminated or chipped areas and coating the whole lot for a fresh and consistent look.
