Tung oil vs linseed for timber handles?

I am renewing the timber handles on an old Weber kettle. The YouTube I saw recommends Tung oil. I want to renew lots of other timber finishes around my old house eg timber finishes around doors and under aluminium windows and outdoor furniture. Is it worth buying enough tung oil for all these projects eg 4 litres or can I get the same protection for less $?

Tung oil is an excellent choice for renewing timber finishes, especially if you want a durable, water-resistant, and natural-looking result. It penetrates the wood deeply and cures to a hard, flexible finish that is well-suited for outdoor furniture, window surrounds, door frames, and anything that experiences regular wear or exposure to moisture.

While it does take longer to dry and is more expensive than linseed oil, its long-term protection and minimal maintenance requirements often make it worth the investment, particularly if you are treating timber in high-traffic or exterior areas.

On the other hand, linseed oil, particularly the boiled variety, is more affordable and easier to find. It is a good option for indoor trims or areas where moisture is less of a concern. However, it darkens over time, is less water-resistant, and may require more frequent reapplication.

Given your intention to treat multiple timber surfaces around the house, including exterior features, purchasing a larger quantity of tung oil is a practical approach. It will provide a consistent finish and reliable protection across your projects, making it the better all-around choice.
