Re: balcony base repair

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @cai. It's terrific to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about repairing a wall.

This is usually caused by moisture getting into the masonry over time, so the key is not just making it look better, but fixing it properly so it does not come back.

You will need to start by chipping away and removing all loose, crumbly and delaminated material along that section until you get back to solid, sound masonry. Do not be tempted to patch over weak material because it will just fail again. Once you have reached a firm surface, thoroughly clean the area to remove dust, grit and debris, as good adhesion depends on this.

Before applying any repair product, lightly dampen the masonry with a spray bottle so it is damp but not dripping wet. This helps prevent the existing wall from sucking moisture out of the repair too quickly and improves bonding. You can then rebuild the damaged section using a suitable masonry repair compound, pressing it in firmly and shaping it to match the original profile of the balcony base with a trowel.

After the repair has fully cured, it is important to seal and protect it. Painting the area with an exterior-grade paint will help prevent future moisture ingress.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
