Re: How to paint laminate shower stall?

Hi @cathy1,

I'd also like to welcome you to the Bunnings Workshop community and many thanks for your question.

I've raised it with a couple of our suppliers who specialise in these types of paints and there are a few issues which would prevent their products from being used. When laminate is being mentioned on products such as White Knight White Renew Tile And Laminate Paint they are referring to laminate cupboards.

When dealing with sheeting in a shower recess there are a few types of surfaces. If the sheeting was installed within the last ten years it is possibly a laminate or it could be an acrylic sheeting. These laminate paints won't stick to acrylic sheeting. If it is a laminate, then they often have a highly water repellant surface and this can also be an issue with the paints. If the sheeting was installed in the 60's, 70's or 80's then there is a good chance that it is an asbestos-based panel and you won't be able to complete the sanding process required for the paint to adhere.

These products are designed to work on laminate cupboards and unfortunately anything else would be an experiment.

You might like to consider adhering an Estilo 90 x 90 x 190cm White Acrylic Shower Wall over the top of the existing laminate.

In regards to your question about the Rust-Oleum spray paint, if you follow the directions on surface preparation the paint should adhere correctly.

Please let me know if you need further assistance or had questions.

thanks Mitchell,

I did look into putting the sheeting over the top but thought it was a bit expensive.

So the White Knight tub and basin won’t work either?

i think it might be a trial and error type of thing unfortunately but thank you so much for your help.

will show you a before of the bathroom with the same laminate on the walls and a so far picture that I have done so far.

thanks again for your help.

Re: How to paint laminate shower stall?

Hi @cathy1,

According to the technical assistant at White Knight, they don't have any products that they were 100% sure would work in your circumstance. If the panelling is acrylic or laminate and you can ascertain that it is not asbestos-based then I would recommend sanding as much of the glossy coating back as possible. This will ensure the primer and paint has the best chance of sticking to the surface. You might like to do a test section in an inconspicuous place before committing to the entire bathroom.

Keep us updated.

Re: How to paint laminate shower stall?

Hi @cathy1,

It is recommended to use a product similar to Selleys 300g Wet Area Waterproof Silicone Sealant - White on the panel joining strip and Sika 300g Showerbond Shower Wall Lining Adhesive to adhere the panel to the wall.

Please let me know if you have further questions. We're here to help.

Hi Cathy and Mitchell

Do you have any update about whether it worked putting new shower panels over old ones?

Thanks
