A huge deck perfect for outdoor entertaining with friends and family was built for under $6,000.
The project
Bunnings Workshop member Tara built this 12m x 4.2m deck for under $6,000, including joists, bearers, posts, cement and screws. By purchasing Merbau decking boards in different lengths, Tara was able to keep her budget down, but it did mean that she had to spend extra time measuring and cutting the Merbau to align with the bearers.
Tara later built steps, covered the exposed area under her deck and landscaped between the deck and side fencing.
One of the most common questions Tara has been asked about the project was whether she required council permission. "We didn’t need a permit as long as it wasn’t attached to the house for stability," Tara says. "Ours is completely seperate to the house. However, if we decide to build a pergola we are required to apply for one."
