I have adopted the pocket park next door to my home it is a waterfront park that BC was dry salty reclaimed land that was very unloved by our council It is my project to beautify my street. I have an extensive bird life amongst the trees orchids ferns natives bromeliads elks stags it is a peaceful well loved park by our community
Soil fertilisers home grown compost mixed with purchased chicken manure Plants hanging baskets hoses nozzles sprinklers bird baths rocks stones bark chip
Cut back weeded cleaned out 30 years of rubbish
Rebuilt up the soil base with compost
positioned 16 rainforest rocks around the park to stop cars driving through it
Transplanted elks stags and native orchids on to the palm trees and acacias
Added plants spread seeds and pruned routinely
Chose plants for the various sections of the garden beds. had the council remove a lot of the bad palm trees and fig trees that were struggling to grow
vegetation that was hardy sun tough and offered minimal work plus would bring moisture back into the garden beds
Chose to grow back grass and pull the bonfire clover seasonally
I organise neighbourhood clean up days
seasonally there is always colour in the park due to annuals and perennials
the park is very lush and rich in variation and moist many lizards birds hares bats and parrots fur to the new eccosystem
crested
orchids of many varieties and colours have filled the trees elks and stags in the park
they are propagated naturally

That’s such a wonderful project to take on. You’ve really transformed the park into something special. Rebuilding the soil base and thoughtfully choosing hardy, low-maintenance plants were both great decisions that will help it thrive long-term. It’s clear the space is now a peaceful and well-loved part of your community. Well done!
We look forward to seeing what you tackle next.
Mitchell
