Hi guys,
Just moved into new place first time lawn owner. Have some questions:
1. Could someone help identify what type of grass I have?
2. Also in the second photo attached, is this a weed that is growing (thr longer stems with purple tips)? This is only found in the front lawn, the neighbours front lawn seems to have these growing as well none in my backyard lawn though.
3. What's the best thing I can do to try create a "fuller" look to my lawn as some areas looking bare?
Appreciate any advice and help!
Thanks in advance!
Jimmy
1. Backyard lawn
2. Front lawn weeds?
3. Backyard lawn
Hello @lilabear
Thanks for sharing your question about your lawn. It appears to be kikuyu lawn, the blades are broad, flat, and have a coarse texture. It appears to have a stolon on the first picture, but I can only see one of it in the corner. I suggest using Yates 2.4L BuffaloPro Weed 'N' Feed Hose On Weed Killer for general safety.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Thanks Eric! Yes I wasn’t sure if it was Kikuyu or Buffalo so I’ll go with your recommendation to be safe. Appreciate your help!
Hi all,
trying to figure out what type of grass I got pictured above, I’m 50% sure it’s couch or similar due to it being dormant in winter and highly invasive and quick growing in the warmer months but I want to be sure.
Also got this small thin weed that is substantially smaller in height than the rest of the lawn also appears to have seeds at the very tip of the plant.
Last but not least not sure if this is a grassy type of weed or apart of the existing lawn, I have random clusters of these longer and larger blades of grass spread through out the lawn, they grow significantly quicker and larger than the rest of the lawn
any help in identify and controlling/eliminating these would be great.
many thanks.
Hello @brodymcl
In the first picture, the lawn does resemble couch grass. Couch tends to go dormant and brown off in winter, then spreads aggressively through runners in the warmer months, which matches what you described. The fine, dense leaf blades and low growth habit are also common traits of couch.
In the second picture, the thinner, upright growth with seed heads at the tips is a common lawn weed. It could be winter grass (Poa annua) or a similar fine-seeded grass species. These weeds usually sit just above the lawn canopy, producing little tufts of seed that spread quickly.
In the third picture, the coarse, longer blades growing in distinct clumps are not typical of couch and are likely a different grass variety or grassy weed invading the lawn. They could be kikuyu or paspalum seedlings, both of which grow much faster and taller than couch, standing out in patches.
If your goal is a uniform couch lawn, the second and third growth types would be considered weeds and may need control with a selective herbicide or manual removal.
Here are some suggested herbicide options:
Please remember to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a mask when using chemicals in your garden.

Hi,
Just wondering if someone can help me ID what grass this is? I am very unsure.
Thanks
Hello @NamedUser
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about grass identification.
From the images you shared, the lawn appears to be a warm-season grass, likely Kikuyu or Couch. Here are some identifying features based on your photos:
In the first and third photos, the blades are bright green, narrow, and pointed with a dense upright growth, which is typical of Couch grass. It tends to create a fine, tight surface when well-maintained.
In the second and fifth photos, the grass looks thinner, slightly brown in patches, and shows a lower, more creeping growth habit, which is also consistent with Couch grass when stressed or dormant.
Kikuyu usually has broader leaves, is lighter green, and grows more aggressively with visible runners. Your lawn, however, shows finer leaf blades and tighter growth, pointing more strongly toward Couch rather than Kikuyu.
Sir Walter Buffalo, another common lawn type, can be ruled out because it has much wider, softer blades and a very different appearance.
So, based on the close-ups and broader lawn photos, I’d say this lawn is most likely Couch grass.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.
Eric
Hi @NamedUser,
Couch has a spike and a three-pronged seed head, which your lawn doesn't display. Kikuyu seedheads are different once again, and I would say this seedhead looks most similar to a Zoysia. However, the blades of your grass look more akin to Buffalo to me.
Let me tag @Adam_W to see if he has any thoughts.

Thanks @MitchellMc
Hopefully @Adam_W can come to the rescue because I am going around in circles trying to figure out what this grass is!!
Is there anything else I can do / provide to get a clear indication?
