How to identify grass or lawn type?

Hi guys, 

Just moved into new place first time lawn owner. Have some questions:

1. Could someone help identify what type of grass I have?

2. Also in the second photo attached,  is this a weed that is growing (thr longer stems with purple tips)? This is only found in the front lawn, the neighbours front lawn seems to have these growing as well none in my backyard lawn though.

3. What's the best thing I can do to try create a "fuller" look to my lawn as some areas looking bare? 

Appreciate any advice and help!

Hi,I am totally new to gardening and I am puzzled by the kind of grass I have - it looks like buffalo but I am not so sure.

I also found some invading grass and weeds. I am interested in some weed and feed products but it looks they are for buffalo or non-buffalo? 🤔

Any recommendation for a newbie?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @waltercflui. It's terrific to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about lawn care.

That looks like Buffalo to me. Regardless, as long as you use weed and feed products suitable for Buffalo, they'll be fine for all other grasses. I'd recommend you go with Yates 2.4L BuffaloPro Weed 'N' Feed Hose On Weed Killer. The spray-on version is convenient to apply, but we also have a granular: Yates 10kg BuffaloPro Weed 'n' Feed Granular Weed Killer. It will knock off the clover you've pictured and various other common lawn weeds.

I would see if the "feed" element would help the sparse area that I could see the soil. 

Or I should consider seeding later on once the weeds are gone? 🤔

It depends on how sparse the area is @waltercflui. You typically won't find buffalo seeds in a packet. Your best best would be to re-turf the area.

Thanks! The weed and feed hose start taking effect!

But at the same time there seems to be some invading grass species coming in (doesn’t look like weed). They look greener and flourish much faster than my other buffalo grass. I guess the weed and feed won’t help but what could I do to get rid of them?

Hi @waltercflui,

It's great to see that your lawn is getting better after your use of the weed and feed.

It looks to me like you have some winter grass poking through the buffalo. 

I'd suggest applying Amgrow Winter Grass Killer to control it, ensuring you follow the manufacturer's instructions closely.

Please also ensure you wear gloves, eye protection, a mask and long protective clothing while applying this product.

Hi gardening gurus!

I really would need some help please with identifying my lawn type so I can purchase the seeds to repair some of the bald patchy areas. I moved into my new place few months ago and the lawn was dying at that time, which explains the horrible looking lawn below. It looked slightly better now with more greens despite still lots of weeds to be taken care of.

From what I have checked, it is definitely not the buffalo lawn, I have got some mixed opinions from friends - kikuyu/tall fescue 

I am located in Melbourne, and have a north facing yard if that helps a bit. So sorry I am at my wits end as I am afraid to use the wrong seed and get a “mixed” lawn.

Hi @audzzz,

It's obviously a very thin-bladed grass. One that springs to mind is Kentucky Bluegrass. However, it could just be a mix of thin-bladed grass, which is often sold in packets to fill in areas. I'm not overly convinced this is a lawn that's been sown or was selected. It could just be a weedy type of grass that had naturally taken over the area after the established lawn died off.

Thin-bladed grasses are not very hard-wearing, so you might like to consider whether re-turfing with something like Sir-Walter Buffalo would be a more viable solution.
