How to remove a built-in raised garden bed?

We moved to a new place a couple of years ago and haven't done much with the backyard. There is a raised garden bed along the back fence which I hate. Would it be difficult to DIY remove? I'd rather plant lawn and also remove some pavers for more lawn. I've got a dog and the raised garden bed is basically his digging zone (there was also retic which he dug up) so we can't really do anything with it. I've added photos. Please ignore the broken fence - it blew over last week and insurance will cover it.

Thanks for your question and for sharing the photos—it’s understandable you’d want to make the space more dog-friendly and functional.

The first thing we need to clarify is whether the fence and the cement sheeting used for the raised garden bed are made from asbestos. The profile shown is very similar to Super Six sheeting, which did historically contain asbestos. Unfortunately, this same design continued to be used even after asbestos was phased out, so visual inspection alone can’t confirm whether it’s safe. You’ll need to have it tested to be sure—there are many services available where you can either send in a sample or have someone come out to test it on site. Until you know for certain, it’s best not to disturb it.

Assuming the sheeting is safe to remove, the rest of the job is definitely DIY-friendly but will require a fair bit of manual labour. You’ll need to deconstruct the garden bed, remove the excess soil, potentially remove or relocate the reticulation, and then level and prepare the area before laying new turf. Removing the pavers is also manageable with basic tools, and once they're up, you can bring in fresh topsoil to support healthy lawn growth.

Hi,

Thanks so much for your reply. I'm next to certain that the fencing isn't asbestos, as my house was built in the mid 90s. I'll find out for sure though, then post here again.
