How to remove swimming pool in my backyard?

I have a big swimming pool which we rarely use and leaks at the moment. I like to transform it to a small granny flat or a nice garden.

I need your ideas.

kind regards,

Jun Kim

Re: a swimming pool in my backyard

Hi @junheekm,

Having the pool filled in could be an option, and you would be able to build a lovely garden over the top. You'd need to speak with an engineer regarding the possibility of building over the area, and I presume some work would be needed to ensure the ground would be solid enough for that. Given your previous topic about having unused space within your home already, creating a granny flat and additional space could be slightly overextending.

What type of garden would you like to create? Perhaps a grassed area for children to play on or even a pond to add interest to the area? Building a timber deck and having an outdoor dining area would be fantastic when entertaining guests.

I look forward to hearing more about what you would like to achieve in this area.

@junheekm

I had my swimming pool filled in. It's a big job.

We had most of it filled in with clean land fill from nearby housing construction. They were happy to supply most of the soil.

Remember to remove the pool itself (we had ours cut up).

We let it settle, then topped it up with again, topsoil from people who were removing topsoil and building, so we were lucky. De-weeding it was something we did by sifting.

We now have a thoroughly productive fruit and vegetable garden.

Two Olive trees at the "deep end", and regular vegetable rotation for the rest.

The cement surrounds keep it nicely defined.

I agree with @MitchellMc . If you are going to build a granny flat over it, have an engineers report done, because even now, we have a little bit of sinking in some areas, which we top up from time to time, and a lot of mulching.

Re: a swimming pool in my backyard

Hi Jun Kim (@junheekm),

The basic process of filling in an in-ground pool would be to drain the pool, drill holes in the bottom, demolish the top, and fill the pool with the rubble. Since you will have a garden on top of it, you'd need at least 50 centimetres of soil above the rubble for planting into.

If you wanted someone to take care of all this for you, I'm sure you could employ someone who specialises in pool removal.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell

Re: a swimming pool in my backyard

Hello @junheekm

Thank you for posting the photos. My colleague @MitchellMc is currently on leave as his family has recently had a new baby. It is possible to build a garden like this. Drainage will be an issue, if there is a heavy downpour of rain your sunken garden might fill up with water. I suggest planning a drain system for the water to drain out of the pool.

I recommend reconsidering the first idea to fill the pool. If you feel that it is beyond your current experience, I suggest looking at Hipages in your area to get a quote for demolition and filling. You can also search online for pool removal or pool demolition. Each state has its own council rules regarding decommissioning of pools. I suggest going to your local council and have a look at their regulations.

If you need further assistance with his project, please let us know.

Eric
