best way yo get rid of weeds (especially these clovers) for this side of house walkway /garden without damaging the climbers and natives
Hi @amichaelmedia,
Thank you for your question about removing weeds that are in close proximity to your native plants.
I believe you are dealing with creeping oxalis rather than clovers. Clovers have oval-shaped leaves, whereas creeping oxalis have distinctly heart-shaped leaves.
Considering the proximity to plants that you would like to remain unharmed, the best approach is going to be manual removal, especially for the example in the first photo, where the creeping oxalis is firmly embedded in the plant. A good pair of gardening gloves, a kneeling board and an afternoon of weeding should get them under control.
For the weeds that are more open, you could apply a glyphosate-based weedkiller such as Zero to the leaves of the weeds using a Herbicide Applicator Brush or paintbrush, keeping in mind that glyphosate will kill any plant it comes into contact with. I would only use this approach on weeds that are not in close proximity to the plants you don't want to harm.
Allow me to tag our knowledgeable gardeners @Noelle and @mich1972 to see if they have any thoughts.

The 'clovers' are actually an oxalis species, which grow from running stems and bulbs. If you remove them by hand, you need to ensure you also remove ALL the underground and above ground stems and the bulbs -other wise they will regrow within a few weeks.
Treating with a weedkiller containing glyphosate is highly effective. These products are absorbed by leaves only so spraying or painting close to trunks is quite safe as woody stems will not take up the herbicide.
