How to revive a potted Gerbera?

Hello,

One of my potted Gerberas is struggling. How do I save it? Do I cut the drooped flowers? Repot? I noticed that water immediately leaks after watering. Attached are pictures. Thank you!

Re: How to revive a potted Gerbera?

Hi @cdespues,

It’s best to trim off the drooping or dead flowers so the plant can put its energy back into healthy growth. From what you’ve described, it sounds like the potting mix has become hydrophobic, meaning the water runs straight through without soaking in. That’s a good sign the soil quality needs improving. I’d recommend repotting your Gerbera into a slightly larger pot using a fresh, good-quality potting mix that holds moisture better. When watering, aim to keep the soil just slightly moist and only water again once the top has started to dry out. Be careful not to let it sit in soggy soil, as overwatering can be just as harmful as letting it dry out completely.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks! Are drooping leaves also a sign that they need watering?

Re: How to revive a potted Gerbera?

Drooping leaves can be a sign of either too much water or not enough @cdespues, so it’s important to check the soil before deciding. The easiest way is to stick your finger into the potting mix. If it feels wet or even just moist, hold off on watering. If it feels dry or almost dry, then it’s time to give it a drink.
