What is causing the leaves and buds on my gardenia to be going brown on the edges, and buds dropping off.

It looks like your gardenia is feeling a bit stressed, and that’s what’s causing those brown leaf edges and buds to drop. Don’t worry this is actually pretty common, and your plant can bounce back with a few small tweaks.
Most often, gardenias react this way to changes in moisture. They like their soil to stay evenly damp not too soggy, but not too dry either. If the soil dries out completely or stays too wet for too long, the leaves and buds can start to brown or fall off. Try checking the top few centimetres of soil; if it’s dry, it’s time for a drink.
Temperature and humidity also play a big part. Gardenias love steady, warm conditions, so if it’s been windy, cold at night, or very dry, that can cause stress too. A sheltered, bright spot out of strong wind usually helps a lot.
Sometimes the issue comes down to soil chemistry. Gardenias prefer slightly acidic soil, and if it’s too alkaline (especially if you’re using tap water), they can struggle to absorb nutrients. Using a fertiliser made for acid-loving plants, like azalea or camellia food, can give them a nice boost.
In short, your gardenia’s just asking for a little consistency steady moisture, gentle warmth, and a bit of plant food now and then. A layer of mulch will help keep things stable, too.
