Hi would like to grow flowers for cut flowers, colours pinks and white without fragrance and was wondering what would be ideal for cut flowers.
Hi @rosey55,
If you want to grow flowers for cutting in pinks and whites without fragrance, there are plenty of beautiful options to choose from. Zinnias are a fantastic choice as they’re easy to grow, long-lasting in the vase and come in lovely shades of pink and white. Gerberas are also popular, with strong stems and cheerful daisy-style flowers that hold up well once cut. Dahlias give you an incredible variety of shapes and sizes, with many pink and white cultivars available that are scent-free. Chrysanthemums are excellent for their vase life and wide variety of forms, while cosmos bring a soft, airy touch in both pink and white shades, although they don’t last quite as long. Modern carnations are also worth considering, as many varieties are very lightly scented or unscented, with strong stems and vibrant colours.
When growing for cut flowers, it’s best to choose varieties bred for cutting so they have longer stems, and always cut them early in the morning before placing them straight into water. Removing any leaves that would sit below the water line will help prevent bacterial growth and keep your flowers looking fresher for longer. Mixing long-lasting flowers like chrysanthemums with shorter-lived blooms such as cosmos is a great way to balance your arrangements.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
