Re: Why is the hedge not growing and going yellow

Hello @aapatel

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your Japanese box hedge.

Given your regular watering, the yellowing is more likely due to soil issues, nutrient deficiencies, or possibly root problems.

Japanese box hedges prefer well-draining, slightly acidic to neutral soil rich in organic matter. If the soil around them is compacted or heavy, their roots might be struggling to get enough oxygen. This can cause yellowing as the plant fails to take up nutrients properly.

Another possibility is a nutrient deficiency, particularly nitrogen or iron. If the older leaves are yellowing, it's likely a nitrogen issue, while younger leaves turning yellow with green veins can indicate iron deficiency. There's also a chance that the roots are suffering from rot or fungal infections, which can develop in consistently wet or poorly draining soil.

To address this, it might be helpful to check the soil moisture levels and drainage, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer suitable for hedges, and consider a soil conditioner if the ground is particularly compacted.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
