Hi I would like to build a small hidden study nook in the corner of my apartment lounge. See photos for style/look
Ideally it would fit seamlessly for a built in look to:
Width 940mm (exact)
Depth: 700mm (up to)
height 2640mm (up to)
There is no existing wardrobe/carcass in this corner space.
What parts could I use to make this simple but elegant build?
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Gmma. It's amazing to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about creating a study nook.
To start with, since there’s no existing cabinetry in that corner, you’ll essentially be creating a custom-built unit. Most of the “hidden” study nooks you’ve shown in your photos are either in alcoves or flanked by additional cabinetry to give them that built-in, seamless look. If you’re only installing a single standalone unit in this corner, it will likely read more like a cupboard with a desk inset rather than a fully integrated built-in.
For parts, the simplest approach is to work entirely custom. Standard pre-built cabinetry won’t usually work because most come with kickboards that prevent a chair from sliding under, and the panel widths and heights you need won’t line up neatly with off-the-shelf units. A custom carcass gives you control over all dimensions. For the main structure, wide white-coated laminate panels are ideal for the sides, top, and any vertical sections as they’ll give a clean, built-in look. For the desk surface and shelves, you could switch to a multipurpose timber panels to create contrast and durability where it matters.
Your next step is to consider your confidence and comfort level with DIY timber construction. If you’re comfortable with basic joinery, cutting panels to size, and assembling them securely, you can build this unit yourself. If you could provide a bit of information about what tools you have, your experience with cutting and assembling panels, and how precise you want the finished look to be, it will help provide the best construction method and materials.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
