Carport edging and Merbau decked walkway

Carport edging and Merbau decked walkway

Our carport had a very ugly exposed slab after the original sleepers rotted.

The slab was unsightly with weed and grass growing out from under the slab.

i decided to fit new sleepers having laid a black plastic barrier to avoid weeds.

After I had installed the sleepers I filled any gaps with expanding foam filler and grey sealant.

I then built a framework to support a Merbua timber deck which we use as a walkway.

The finishing touch will be the installation of three Holman mini deck lights.

Materials

Treated pine sleepers

Expanding foam filler.

Buildex Treated Pine countersink rib head 10g x 65mm screws for sleepers.

Zenith Treated Pine 8-10 x 50mm decking screws.

90 x 19 Merbua decking boards

3x Holman 045mm LED Deck Lights.

Tools

Makita 3.0Ah lithium battery drills for drilling, countersinking and fixing Merbua.

Ryobi Circular Power Saw.

Dulux weather shield Mayay Grey paint.

Steps

Step 1

1/Planning and designing project

2/ Fitting black plastic along side of concrete slab to inhibit weed growth.

3/ Cut 200 x 50 treated pine to size with 45degree cut at one end.

4/ Installed 200 x 50 treated pine sleepers on the lower side as a frame for Merbua decking.

5/ Fitted treated pine supports along sleepers on carport edge to support Merbua decking on the higher side.

6/ Ran low voltage wire along the the underside of the Merbua decking for installation of deck lights.

7/ Fitted 90 x 19 Merbua decking boards along the length of the framework.

8/ Cut decking boards at a 45 degree angle at one end of the decking.

9/ Fitted 90x19 decking boards along the length of the decking as a protective edge.

10/ Fitted one low voltage down light at the 45 degree end of the deck for safety and illumination.

11/ Next step is to fit HOLMAN Deck Lights ( x3 ) to provide definition along the lower edge of decking.IMG_7138.jpegIMG_7204.jpegIMG_7233.jpegIMG_7234.jpegIMG_7279.jpegIMG_7281.jpegIMG_7202.jpegIMG_7280.jpegIMG_7282.jpegIMG_7291.jpegIMG_7309.jpegIMG_7310.jpeg

Hi @RonnyP,

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you join us.

That's a lovely way to conceal the average-looking slab edge and turn the uneven ground into a usable flat surface.

While it already looks fantastic, it's going to look even better once the deck lights are installed.

Congratulations on your project, it looks great!

Jacob

@Girlfromgoldie1

‘Hi there, I have used a lot of Merbua decking at our beach house in Blairgowrie. I did try a section of the Specrite Pre-oiled Merbua from Bunnings but for this project I decided to us natural Merbua from Peninsula Timber in Rye on the Mornington Peninsula. You would be able to purchase the same 90x19mm decking from most timber yards. Merbua is more expensive than treated pine but is very hard wearing and I love the unique brown colour.
