How can I repair and restore painted deck?

Hi, I'm looking for advice on how to repair this deck and then wash and repaint it to protect and maintain it. Please see the attached photos for the current condition. What steps should I take to fix the damaged boards, clean the surface, and apply a new coat of paint or stain so it lasts longer?

Hello @qnp

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your painted deck.

It appears that part of the deck paint has deteriorated or worn away. If you oil, stain or paint it now, you'll get an uneven patchy finish. In order to properly oil, stain or paint the deck and get a uniform finish the surface must be sanded back to timber. Once the deck has been sanded back you can then begin to paint.

The general process will be to wash the surface of the deck before you sand it. This will remove all the grease and oil that may have settled on the surface and will also prevent clogging the sandpaper on the sander. Once the surface has been sanded you then give it another wash to remove all the sanding residue on the surface. Allow the decking panels to dry off for at least 72 hours, make sure that the surface is dry before you begin painting.

Here are some handy step-by-step guides that will help you with your project:
