It’s great that you’re planning to add outdoor LED lighting @sujoy_kb, but before going ahead, it’s important to clarify a few details, mainly whether your lighting system is 12 volt (low voltage) or 240 volt (mains voltage). The approach and safety requirements differ quite a bit.

If the setup is 240 volt, you’ll need to enlist the help of a licensed electrician. They’ll be able to safely run the wiring through a suitable underground conduit, connect it to a weatherproof outdoor power source, and ensure all fittings are rated for exterior use and protected by an RCD (safety switch). This is essential, as handling mains power outdoors carries significant safety risks and must comply with local electrical regulations.

If, however, the system is 12 volt, such as those powered by a transformer or plug-in garden light kit, you can handle more of the work yourself. It’s still a good idea to run the low-voltage cabling in conduit, particularly if you plan to bury it under soil, pavers, or turf. This helps protect the cable from damage caused by moisture, garden tools, or pests, and keeps things neat and tidy. Keep the transformer or power supply in a dry, sheltered spot, ideally mounted off the ground and protected from rain.

When planning your layout, think about where the power source will be located, the total load on the transformer (if 12 volt), and whether you need a timer, sensor, or switch for convenience.

Thanks @MitchellMc

I need a low 12 Volt connection. How do I get such a connection wire from the usual connections in the attic, conceal it along the wall of the house into the ground in the backyard. It’d be great if you can share an example project.

Hello @sujoy_kb

In order to get a low 12volt connection you would need a transformer that converts 240V down to 12volts (have a look at your LED lighting). Anything coming from the house would be 240volts. You will need to engage the services of an electrician to install a power point outside your house protected in all-weather electrical box. This is where you would plug in your transformer for your LED lighting.

Please let us know if you had something else in mind.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.
