How to add a fence extension?

Kia Ora team.

I've been scratching my head for a while trying to figure out the best way that we can heighten our fence on the front of our property. We have seen a couple of types around our suburb, but we would like to DIY it! Any suggestions are welcome!!

Re: Fence extention

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @SamB. It's sensational to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about fence extensions.

Before our members can offer the best possible advice, would you mind providing a bit more information about your project and what you're hoping to achieve? For example, is there a particular look or style you're going for? Does the extension need to match the existing fence below, or are you open to mixing materials? Were you thinking of using masonry, timber, or something else entirely? If you’ve seen any examples around your neighbourhood that you like, feel free to share a couple of inspiration images as that would really help us understand the look you're after.

In many cases, the simplest solution is to use timber panels to extend upwards from the current fence height, but it all depends on your preferences and what you're working with. Adding posts to the rear of the wall every metre would allow you to then screw in horizontal decking.

What height are you hoping to extend the fence to?

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Kia Ora Mitchell!

Thanks for your reply! I'm open to any ideas! We wanted to do something similar to the photo below, but with posts (Metal ideally) added on top of the existing fence Fence Idea.png

But I am fully open to any ideas!

Re: Fence extention

Hi @SamB,

It's going to be quite difficult to mount a post directly on top of the wall. I suppose it could be done with a post support. Ideally, bolting metal square posts to the rear wall will give you the most positive connection. I've created some renderings to illustrate.
