As the title suggests, I have these walls and I want to erect a permanent tall fence between them. I can only attach to the walls, not the floor
I want to build hit and miss fencing because it's far better for wind, but I can't think of the best way to do that if the face of the fence has to be against one of the walls and therefore the post can't be directly attached to the wall. If I build the fence, then attach through the post to the wall, would that cause any issues with damp, it being against the wall permanently? It's covered so doesn't get wet.
In case anyone isn't sure what I mean, this is hit and miss fencing.
Hi @minklet,
Do you have any photos of the walls that you can upload?
Also, how wide is the gap between the concrete walls?
My idea is as shown below.
You could bolt a H4 post to the wall on the right and one to the wall on the left. You would then need to bolt a second post to the post on the left so that it protrudes past the end of the concrete wall. You could then attach your palings to each side of the posts.
As long as you use H4-treated posts, then you shouldn't have any problems with damp, but you can attach plascourse to the wall side of the posts for some extra protection and peace of mind.
Is there any reason you don't think this would work?
Happy to work with you towards a solution if this doesn't look viable.
Jacob
Not sure why my reply didn't post before
Yes that seems like a good idea, I had thought something similar but wasn't sure if there were other considerations. My main one was the shearing force of the wind. I was also considering a wider h4 post that would protrude out past the wall, but I wonder if that would actually be weaker than two posts bolted together.
Thanks for the suggestion, I think this is the way for me to go. And the plascourse seems like a good idea also
Hi @minklet,
It depends on the span between the two walls.
If it is over 2.4m, then ideally you would have a midspan post, but if it is less than this, you should get away without it.
As long as the wall is in good condition and you are bolting the post to the wall every 450mm or so along its full height, then it should be fine.

It's about 1.5m so should be golden. Thanks
