How to build outdoor cat enclosure?

IMG_2823.jpeg

 Hi,

I am looking to create a cat enclosure in this space. Would like it to be approx 3m (length) x 1m (depth) x 1.7m (height). I don’t have experience with building so thinking using PVC piping might be the best way to go?

I would also like a door to be able to access the enclosure and possible access for the cats from the far left window.

Would it be viable to used PVC piping/netting for this task? Looking for any guidance or advice.

Thank you.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @melb27. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about building a cat enclosure.

Yes, you can definitely use PVC piping and netting for your cat enclosure, and it’s a good low-cost, lightweight option if you’re not confident with woodworking. The main challenge will be making it sturdy enough so it doesn’t wobble or collapse, especially with a door. With PVC, traditional hinges are tricky, so you’d need to get creative. Something like bungee cords, Velcro straps, or sliding panels could work for access.

That said, building the frame out of timber would give you a far stronger and more durable structure, and the construction doesn’t have to be complicated. You can make a simple rectangular frame with 90-degree joints, attach the netting, and add a basic hinged door with standard hardware. For access from the window, you could install a small framed flap or cat door that opens into the enclosure.

If you like, I can sketch a simple diagram showing how a timber frame enclosure could work with a door and window access, which would give you a much clearer idea of how to build it safely and securely for your cats.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Okay perfect! Yes if you could do a simple sketch for the timber frame. That would be amazing! Thank you.

Re: How to build outdoor cat enclosure?

Hi @melb27,

Here's a simple frame design which you could utilise. Most of the joints will simply be butt joints with screws through one timber into the end of another.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
