How to build picture-framed low deck with two levels?

Hello.

Looking to do a picture framed low level deck across two levels – one to be level with doors (Deck A) and one to be slightly lower (Deck B) that is level with the bottom edge of windows. Planning on just doing Deck A first. I don’t have any building experience but have been looking at other designs on here.

The space was previously paved and is between the house and a brick wall. The ramp will be removed and be replaced by a single step down between the two deck heights.

Plans for Deck A (red line)

  • Area is 6700mm long and 4300mm wide
  • Single layer substructure on posts
  • There are a few little details around the edge of the space to work around and two drains; one that was in the middle of the paved area and one next to the bathroom wall
  • 100x100 cypress posts with bitumen rubber paint
  • Bearers and decking boards in the direction of the width
  • From here I am not certain but thinking:
  • 140x45 H3 bearers – stumps approx. 1333mm apart with 150mm counter for each side due to existing concrete near walls on either side;
  • 140x45 or 90x45 H3 joists on joist hangers – spaced 450mm; saw a span table on another post about 1400mm for 140x45 or 900mm for 90x45
  • Depending on which joist will also influence the distance between bearers?
  • Any advise would be appreciated - will try to get a diagram up too
  • Thanks

Re: Picture Framed Low Deck with Two Levels

Hello @jwoo

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your decking project.

The details of your build proposal are very sound. I look forward to seeing your deck framing diagram. Just a friendly reminder to check your local council's rules and regulations in regards to low-level deck size limits and fence gap distance rules.

I also recommend having a look at the Bunnings deck building guide:

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.
