How to clean glue after peeling off window tint film?

After 5 years, the film on the glass balustrade on my balcony has started to bubble (see picture). The film itself comes off quite easily, but there is a sticky residue left behind. What product/solvent can I use to remove this residue ? There are 8 of these panels, so I've got a bit of work to do and would prefer a fairly inexpensive generic solution rather than a specialist product. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.Sticky residueSticky residueBubbling filmBubbling film

Re: How to clean glue after peeling off window tint film

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @TonyButton. It's sensational to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about removing adhesive.

I'd suggest you try a citrus-based glue remover like De-Solv-it 750ml Multi-Purpose Cleaner. It should remove the residue without issue. Apply it on a cool day or in the morning or evening and wait 30mins for it to do its work. You can then use a bladed scraper to remove the majority of the residue. Take care not to dig the corner of the blade into the glass. Follow up with another coat of the cleaner and wipe the glass down with a lint-free microfibre cloth

If this cleaner is not cutting it, you can move on to an acetone-based cleaner like Tricleanium 500ml Adhesive Remover. This product is highly likely to work, though it is best to try less potent products first. Once again, the scraper will come in handy for removing the bulk of the residue.

Please remember your PPE when dealing with chemicals and glass panels (which can shatter unexpectedly). A long-sleeved shirt, pants, enclosed footwear, safety glasses and gloves are necessary. Given that you'll be using a substantial amount of acetone, I'd recommend investing in a Trojan A1+P2 Half Mask Respirator.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
