How to construct a low-level composite deck?

Hi

I am a DIY and constructing a low-level composite deck for the first time. For this project i am considering the following method for the decking frame.

The relevant dimensions, material and installation for the deck and subframe are:

  1. deck area is 6m x 9m,
  2. finished deck level is 150mm above the ground,
  3. 50% of the sub frame will be on concrete and 50% will be on soil,
  4. Sub frame will be H3 90mm x 45mm structural pine,
  5. span of joists will be 1.144m,
  6. joist spacing will be 380mm,
  7. Joist and Bearer Protector G-Tape will be installed on top of joists,
  8. Joist will be painted with 2 coats of Crommelin Exterior Grade Brushable Waterproofer,
  9. soil is covered with geotextile fabric and gravel,
  10. the sub frame is supported with Modular Decking Adjustable Support Feet on concrete area and concrete peers 300mm x x300 x x300m in soil area.

Is this methodology appropriate and is there any recommendations/advice?

Regards

Arthur

Re: How to construct a low-level composite deck?

Hello @Arthur2

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's wonderful to have you join us, and thank you for sharing your question about your low-level deck.

Your list looks comprehensive, would it be possible for you to post a photo of the area where you are planning to install the low-level deck? This will give our members a better idea of what you are building up to and if there is anything we need to look out for. We can then make recommendations on what you might possibly need to add to your decking plan.

Are you planning on building a standard deck frame instead of a single level frame? In regards to the soil section of your deck, have you observed if the area has a slope? Does water flow away from that spot in the garden?

I also recommend having a look at these guides - How to build a low-level deck by @Adam_W and How to build a deck by @MitchellMc. These guides will give you ideas on things that you'll need to to take into consideration when building your deck.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Eric
