Hello
how would you suggest covering up this retaining wall?
we have considered painting or rendering to cover up the blemishes.
we would like to avoid adding high garden beds as we have different plans for the space .
thank you for your help!
Hello @AllanahT23
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about covering the limestone retaining wall.
Looking at the photo, you’ve got a clean, modern backyard layout with a well-maintained lawn and a light-coloured Colorbond fence, but the limestone retaining wall beneath it does stand out with visible blemishes and an uneven surface finish. If you’re looking to maintain a minimal footprint and avoid raising garden beds, then disguising or re-facing the wall is a smart move, especially since it sits so prominently against the open space.
I propose building a small, freestanding faux fence directly in front of the limestone retaining wall to effectively conceal its blemishes without modifying the structure. This approach keeps the visual profile low while allowing flexibility for any future plans in the area. Using vertical palings would lend a classic, coastal or cottage-style look.
Another option is the Ekodeck 219 x 26mm 3.6m Carbon Batten Screen Castellated Panel, which is both highly durable and low-maintenance. Designed to withstand harsh weather without fading or warping, these composite panels are well-suited to Perth’s conditions. Beyond practicality, they introduce a modern texture and depth to the walls structure.
If you are open to modifying the wall itself, rendering could also provide a clean and uniform appearance, but this is only advisable if the rear of the retaining wall has been properly waterproofed. Without that protection, moisture could become trapped and cause bubbling or long-term surface damage. In your case, a faux fence or batten screen offers the safest and most effective solution with the least compromise to the space.

Hi @AllanahT23
Cheap quick solution would be to prime coat and paint. or for the best looking result render it.

Good Morning @AllanahT23
I was thinking of using some garden edging to cover/partially cover the limestone for the short term before your plans for the space start.
Tuscan Path 250mm x 3.2m Woodland Grey Garden Edging or
Rola Pak 300mm x 2.8m (approx) Treated Pine Ezy Edge Garden Edging
There are a large range of edges Garden Bed Edging that you could place against the wall, I couldnt find anything that would be tall enough to cover all the stonework tho. I do liek @EricL's suggestion of the eco deck panel as an alternative.
