How to extend height of timber fence?

Hi, long term reader first time poster

I am currently installing a pool in QLD and my fence needs to be 1.8m high, and the current height is around 1.7m. I have a timber fence and was thinking a cheap option would be to run a timber paling horizontal across the top but what would be the best way to fix it? I will also be painting my side in monument.

Thanks so much!

Re: fence extension

Hi @zigger777,

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

The idea of using a paling to add that extra height sounds good, but you would need it to sit directly on top of the palings to hit that 1.8m height, which could be tricky.

Instead of using a paling, I'd suggest using a 150 x 25mm Plinth. That way, you could overlap the plinth board with the palings by 50mm, then drive 40mm Galvanised Timber Screws through the plinth into the palings to hold it in place.

I'd suggest you attach it with 2 screws aligned vertically into every 5th paling. Having two screws aligned vertically will limit the ability for the top to roll downwards and, over time, pull the screws out.

Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Jacob
