How to fix leaning fence?

Hi,

Because of the wind, our fence has been leaning out too much. Not quite sure how to fix it. Any suggestions?

Re: how to fix leaning fence

Hi @Vidya,

Some questions:

Are you the owner or renting.

Did you discuss the situation with a person over the other side.

Can you post some photos of the area including shots along the fence line in both directions.

Cheers

.

Re: how to fix leaning fence

Hello @Vidya

Thank you for sharing your question about your leaning fence. @AlanM52 has posted some very important questions regarding your fence. If you can please add some extra information and a picture of your fence, we'll be able to offer you recommendations on what steps to take.

Generally speaking, when your fence starts to lean, it is either your fence posts have rotted out, or they have come loose at the base. This means that the fence post was not properly dug in and they were put in a very shallow post hole. The typical fix is to replace the posts and re-build the fence. But if only one or two posts have given way these may be replaced without having to disassemble the entire fence. This is why it is important for us to see the current condition of the fence so that we can provide you with relevant recommendations.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Eric

Hey @AlanM52,

Th thank you for the response. It's not the entire fence. We share the fence with 2 neighbours. It has begun to lean after one of the neighbour's part is done, into the one where there is empty lot. I'm adding additional photos from front.

Re: how to fix leaning fence

Hi @Vidya,

From what you’ve shown in the photos, it looks like this lean is beyond a simple “prop it up” fix. When a fence is leaning that heavily, it usually means multiple posts and their footings have failed or shifted. In your case, the wind may have started the lean, but the underlying problem is that the posts and concrete footings aren’t holding in the soil. Once one post moves, it puts extra stress on the neighbouring posts, so the lean quickly spreads along the fence line.

At this point, the most practical approach is to remove the affected section and rebuild it properly. This means digging out the old posts, making sure the new post holes are deep enough and set in good concrete footings, then reattaching the fence panels. You might be able to save the sections that are still straight, but anything showing a significant lean or twisted footings is unlikely to be stable without full replacement.

It’s worth getting a couple of fencing contractors to quote, because they can assess exactly how many posts need replacing and ensure the new section is installed correctly, so it won’t lean again. While it’s tempting to try temporary braces, for a severe lean like yours, that’s mostly a short-term solution and may just make the problem worse.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell

Hi @Vidya,

Yes... that needs a prompt response to stabilize that area of the fence.

Personally I consider that a emergency repair job and would make (if needed) a token effort (short timeline important) to contact who might be involved and if no response within a week I would proceed to 'make safe' that section of the fence with long star pickets braced with shorter pickets. That is a temporary fix and you should continue to make enquires about proper repairs.

That is my personal opinion and not implying you should follow the same recommendations.

Oh... what are those signs posted on the front top corner?

Cheers
