How to make wooden outdoor steps skidproof in the wet?
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @DVR. It's fabulous to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about anti-slip.
Could you tell us a little more about your timber stairs? Are they bare timber, painted, or have they been coated with anything previously? That will help us suggest the best way to make them skidproof.
There are a few options you could look into, ranging from anti-slip tape that can be applied to each tread, through to heavy-duty stair tread nosing. There are also spray-on anti-slip coatings available.
The main thing to remember with timber steps is that regular cleaning and proper sealing are key to keeping them safe. If the timber absorbs too much water, it can start to break down and become quite slippery.
If you’re able to share a few photos of the steps, that would really help us give more specific advice. Let me know if you’d like a hand uploading them.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you. The steps are old but solid wood. I have just cleaned them to get rid of mould etc. So I will need to seal them with something before applying any anti skid treatment. Advice much appreciated.
Hello @DVR
I propose having a look at the Cabot's 2L Brown Timbercolour Deck And Exterior Paint. It is a premium, self-priming, oil-enriched acrylic paint. It has been specifically formulated to provide exceptional durability to all exterior timber surfaces and decks. My best advice is to make sure that the paint is totally cured before you apply the anti-slip product. Here are two more anti-slip products that you can have a look at - Roberts 1m Black Bull Stairnose Trim with Carborundum Insert and Brutus 75 x 10 x 1200mm Aluminium Stair Tread.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.
