How to paint over Penetrol on rusty window lintels?

Have cleaned off and painted Penetrol on some rusty window lintels, and now need to paint over them.

Can I use a product such as Taubmans 3in1 Primer to overpaint these. Realise it is not oil based, but is a good quality primer.

Have found a few mixed results for this, some saying, yes, that's fine, others saying you must use an oil based primer...??

Thanks.

Re: Painting over Penetrol

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @hornetster. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about Penetrol rust treatment.

If you've used The Flood Company 300g Penetrol Spraycan on the rusted section, then you should overcoat it with White Knight Rust Guard Medium Grey Metal Primer Paint, which will then allow you to topcoat with Dulux Weathershield or Taubmans All Weather.

Any water-based paint will have difficulties adhering to the oil-based Penetrol. However, water-based paint can adhere to the solvent-based White Knight primer.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
