Hi there
Purchased a place about a year ago and wanting to reoil my deck. Not sure what type of wood the deck is made of and what a suitable product is?
Also noticed some cracks on the deck already, do these need to be filled?
Hi @Xolstis,
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.
I'm not 100% certain what species of timber you have, but it looks like it could be pine with a decking stain.
If you look inside the cracks, or on the underside of the decking boards, is the timber a different colour?
I suspect they have used a stain like this Cabot's 4L Merbau Water Based Deck And Exterior Timber Stain to colour and protect the timber.
Could you do some investigation and come back to me? I will assist further when you can.
Jacob
Hey Jacob
Thanks! Had a quick look and you may be right. It does look like they painted/stained/sealed the timber before installing the decking. But can just see in the gaps here the lighter colour
Hello @Xolstis
I suggest using Polyfilla 450g Exterior Timber Filler for the cracks and deep knots that may have appeared along the surface of the deck. It does appear that they painted the decking panels before installation. If you really wish to see what kind of timber panel you have, I suggest sanding one section that is under cover back to timber. Once you see the timber surface, please post a photo and we'll try to identify the timber decking you have.
Eric
Thanks Eric
The more pressing thing for me is what to use to protect the deck from further deterioration 😃
Periodic coats of Cabot's 4L Merbau Water Based Deck And Exterior Timber Stain will protect the timber @Xolstis. Anytime it appears to be drying out or cracking apply your stain.
