Hi!
looking to refresh our outdoor patio/area.
is this timber painted? I’m not sure what they did in the past and whether or not this is old paint?
any help appreciated!
Hi @ElaineBenes,
It looks most likely to be a stain rather than paint, though it has deteriorated quite a bit in places. The timber itself is also showing some signs of wear, so the best approach would be to sand it back. That will remove the old, patchy stain and resurface the timber so you’re starting fresh. From there, you can choose whether to re-stain for a natural timber look or go with paint if you’d prefer a solid colour finish. Either way, sanding first with 180-grit will give you a much better result and longer-lasting finish. That's obviously going to be quite time-consuming, but given how the surfaces are, it is necessary. I'd recommend picking up an electric sander to expedite the process.
