Hi,
I am wanting to do something similar to rendering this retaining wall. I have read conflicting information around whether I can render it or not so am looking for cheap options to repair/smoothen and lighten the colour of the wall. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Hi @Reef,
You've likely read conflicting information about rendering sandstone because, while it is technically possible, due to the porous nature of the stone, it is difficult to get render to adhere long-term, and it is not a simple case of applying a general-use render. As it is a specialised process that requires experience to achieve quality results, we tend to advise people that they should speak with a professional with experience rendering sandstone rather than attempting to do it themselves or consider alternatives.
Alternatively, you can attach timber battens to the sandstone, then clad them with fibre cement sheeting and render over the top. This would make the rendering process much simpler.
Another option is to clad the stones with something like merbau screening or decking.
Let me know what you think, and if you've got further questions, don't hesitate to ask.
